Literacy and Numeracy Catch–up funding

What is it?

The literacy and numeracy catch-up premium gives schools additional funding from the Department of Education to support our Year 7 pupils who did not achieve at least level 4 in reading and/or mathematics at the end of Key Stage 2 (KS2).

What do we do?

We assess the individual needs of each of the students who attract the Year 7 catch-up premium to decide the best way to use the funding. We carefully monitor the progress of all of our students and design a range of programmes and approaches that we know are effective.

At ACS we have a designated literacy co-ordinator, and a designated numeracy co-ordinator and skilled practitioners in delivering numicon and fresh start courses for our least able, or for students with English as an additional language (EAL).

How do we do it?

  • All Yr 7, 8 and 9 students are screened using a diagnostic reading and spelling test on ‘Accelerated Reader’ (AR).
  • All students in Year 7 and 8 follow the ‘Accelerated Reader’ - a programme that supports students in reading, enjoying and understanding texts.
  • All low-ability students are supported in their mathematics and English classes by additional staff and some withdrawal. In Year 9, smaller booster groups have also been created.
  • Fresh Start (FS) is a catch-up literacy intervention for students at risk of falling behind their peers in early secondary schooling. It provides systematic and rigorous practice in phonics. Teaching in these groups begins with recognition, practice and blending of sounds and graphemes, based on a set of module booklets.
  • If students are identified as not making expected progress they can then access the additional intervention lessons in English and mathematics, which is aligned with low ability student intervention sessions.

What is the impact?

  • In 2015-16 we received £15,000 in funding; 70% of students who were below expected levels at primary School made expected progress in English in Year 7. 45% of students made expected progress in mathematics.
  • In 2016-17 we will receive funding of approximately £15,000 for the students who haven’t achieved Age related expectations. Their progress will be carefully monitored by SENCO, and numeracy and literacy co-ordinators. It is expected at the end of Year 7 that all students who are not making expected progress will receive additional lessons in English and mathematics to ensure that any progress gap is closed.

Students to have PLCs of the skills and topics that they cannot do and have specific intervention to improve these aspects

All ‘numicon’ students to make rapid progress in basic numeracy, and show significant improvement on maths baseline tests following delivery of the program.

A positive residual score between Star reader test 1 and Star reader test 6. All students’ scores should have increased and those who have been identified as below expected literacy levels in Year 6 would have made more progress than other students to allow them to catch up

Students reading ages are monitored closely, so that students can read the most appropriate books that promote their reading skills
